Art Exploration A

This class is an introduction of the basic fundamentals of art. Students will explore the elements and principles of design through hands on art activities focusing on line, color, value, shape, form and texture. Throughout the course students will use a variety of media and learn of artists whose artwork utilize the elements and principles of design. This is a prerequisite for studio courses.

Art Exploration B

Through hands on projects students will explore the elements and principles of design with focus on balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, and unity. Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different careers in art, fine artist, graphic designer, architecture, and museum curator. This is a prerequisite for studio classes.

Art History

This is a survey of art history from antiquity to the present, including architecture and sculpture. Students will study the history of art through a mixture of hands on experiences including, research, videos, writing, multimedia presentation, group discussions, student presentations, and hands on projects in a studio environment. Projects will include both written material and artwork.

Drawing and Painting I

This is a studio course that introduces students to a variety of different drawing and painting techniques. Students will produce work in a variety of media such as colored pencil, pen and ink, acrylic, watercolor and pastels. In addition to art production, the course will include research into art history and art criticism. Students will be required to write reflections in support of their work.

Drawing and Painting II

In this class students choose to focus on drawing, painting or mixed media, creating a portfolio that demonstrates their understanding of their chosen technique. This is a studio class that offers students a chance to discover their own style, through hands on projects, artistic journaling with historic references and written reflections as well as individual and group critiques. Both traditional and contemporary subject matter will be explored. Instruction on the presentation of finished artwork and the mounting of exhibitions will also be included. The students will be required to write an artist’s statement in support of their work.

Students will have the opportunity to take this class a second time for credit with a different emphasis and a student and teacher created portfolio application.

Advanced Drawing

Students will have the opportunity to further explore their personal drawing style, and learn new techniques, while developing a portfolio that can be used to further a career in the arts.

Advanced Painting

Students will have the opportunity to choose a focus area in ceramics. While learning advanced techniques, students will create a comprehensive portfolio that can be used to further a career in the arts.

Sculpture and Ceramics

The students will design and construct three dimensional sculptures. Emphasis will be in functional and non functional ceramics. Papier-mache, assemblage, installation, and environmental art will also be explored. Students will produce work in a studio setting creating portfolios that reflect their understanding of themes, terminology, a variety of hand building and wheel throwing techniques as well as relief sculpture. Instruction on the presentation of finished artwork and the mounting of exhibitions will also be included. The students will be required to write reflections in support of their work. Students will have the opportunity to take this class a second time for credit with a student and teacher created portfolio application.

Advanced Ceramics

Students will have the opportunity to choose a focus, area in ceramics. While learning advanced techniques, students will create a comprehensive portfolio that can be used to further a career in the arts.

Advanced Sculpture

Students will have the opportunity to choose a focus area in sculpture. While learning advanced techniques, students will create a comprehensive portfolio that can be used to further a career in the arts.
