Flexible Learning: Falcon Learning and Connecting Days

Falcon Days: Things to know

What?

A Falcon Day is a day where students are given continued online instruction and assignments or pre-planned activities to complete at home when school is cancelled due to inclement weather. Faribault Public Schools is offering Falcon Days for the first time beginning in the 2019-20 school year.

When?

The first two missed school days due to inclement weather will not be rescheduled and will not be Falcon Days. Up to five subsequent days can be made up as Falcon Days, as long as school is postponed before 6 a.m. Faribault Public Schools will announce Falcon Days via robocall, on our website (www.faribault.k12.mn.us) and on Facebook.

Why?

Falcon Days give our students the ability to continue learning, even when school is postponed due to inclement weather. For our secondary students (grades 6-12), Falcon Days provide them the opportunity to engage with digital resources, collaborate virtually, and develop digital skills that will serve them well in the future. For our elementary students, Falcon Days allow them to collaborate with their family members outside a classroom environment through pre-planned educational activities.

Additionally, since Falcon Days count as school days, they will eliminate the need for as many as five make-up days at the end of the school year.

Who?

Students, teachers and parents all play a role in making Falcon Days days successful.

How?

Teachers will…

●communicate their individual Falcon Day plans in advance

●be available to students both online and by telephone during school hours

●take attendance for each class period. If a student does not complete the Falcon Day tasks after three days, they will be counted absent. Attendance can be verified five ways:

●Logging in to class page(s) on the district’s/school’s learning management system (Schoology).

●Email exchange/text exchange/phone call with teacher.

●Parent verifies attendance; a documentation process is developed and retained by the school as part of the student’s attendance record.

●Activity in classes (pages accessed, discussion participation, formative assessments completed).

●Work submitted during the e-Learning day (evidence of learning or preparation for learning—reading or video with notes).
