Over the last several years, Faribault Public Schools has consistently heard from members of the community an interest in bringing a seven-period day back to the high school. FHS adopted a six-period day in the early 1980s as a cost-saving measure. It’s now the only school in the Big 9 Conference operating on a six-period schedule. A seven-period day would allow students to have more schedule flexibility, choose from a wider variety of class options, and take advantage of more college preparatory classes and career readiness opportunities like internships, while also helping them avoid having to take classes in the summer. Currently over 150 students are taking classes over the summer because the constraints of a six-period schedule don’t allow them to take all state-required classes and their preferred electives at the same time.

In January we surveyed the community about a potential $1.2 million operating levy that would fund a seven-period day at the high school and allow the district to retain additional staff throughout the district. The tax impact of that levy would be $92 per year on an average home in Faribault. Forty-five percent of the 400 community members surveyed said it would make them more likely to approve an operating levy if it allowed for the institution of a seven-period day.
